The game throws a lot of skills at you pretty quickly, and I feel like I haven't had the practice time to fully understand all the moves and combat styles. It's not that I can't beat them, but that it takes several attempts on encounters that crop up every ~10 minutes. But I missed the boat on Dark Souls, haven't played a lot of 3rd person action games in the past few years, and I'm routinely struggling through fights so much that I have to put down the controller. So I've been enjoying the game so far, love the story and aesthetic, and want to get better at the combat.

Once you're a decent way into the story and have unlocked some good abilities and increased your power level, the harder difficulties start to feel much better (I've since bumped it up from Normal and haven't gone back since).Going to get 'game is hard' out of the way so we can move on You will die in one or two hits and enemies take FOREVER to kill (this is my biggest gripe - it slows the game way down in the beginning). I started on hard and moved it down until later on because the beginning is just a slog on the harder difficulty. If you like a challenge, I found Normal to be the best tuned for the early game. Though there are some important aspects of the combat system that are locked until later in the game. It's also worth noting that most of the abilities you get as the game progresses are metroid-vania type abilities to help you access certain chests or areas. Though bear in mind, almost all the 'new abilities' that you get are part of the main story, so if you want to keep progressing, you'll need to keep moving the story along. The game does a pretty good job of introducing mechanics and complexity to the combat system over the course of the story. Remember to kick shit off cliff edges, throw axe at their head to freeze them then R2 kick them they're weaker so that helps get rid of them quickly Try and take out the ranged enemies with your axe throws as early as you can because they're a right pain in the arse to keep dodging the fireballs whilst you're fighting lots of other enemies at the same time. Very useful on hardest diff as you do more damage on juggled enemies I believe Use atreus' arrows to help keep your target in the air when you're hitting them with the combos, just hit square while fighting them and it'll do it. Use atreus' arrows to distract groups of mobs and spam your axe at them Remember you can't block the attacks from stronger mobs that flash yellow before they hit, you have to parry them with the timed block or they will just stagger you and leave you open to attack time it well with the incoming attacks so you can parry them and it goes slowmo, you can use this very effectively to control groups of enemies as it staggers all close to you, extremely necessary on the hardest difficulty. Shield: hold to block obviously, don't forget about your shield. Double tap dodge/roll which is super handy, use it to gtfo and use it to dodge attacks, you can roll around quite a lot just dodging things to get somewhere safer/pick up health Dodge: don't forget you've got two types, the quick one tap dodge which will NOT interrupt your attack combo (personally I keep forgetting to utilise this).
